We invite you to participate in the next master workshop of Serfenta! It will be a unique meeting with a basket maker who weaves beautiful, unique baskets of  special material spruce roots.

During the workshop, we will show you a unique expedition and encounter with nature – we will see material of how the master goes into the forest and see how to obtain spruce roots. This is a difficult but very durable material. Acquiring it is labor-intensive – each root must first be “hunted” and then excavated. You also need to have a lot of knowledge and sensitivity to do it without harming the environment.

During our workshops, we will get know the material, and each participant will create a unique round basket of spruce root with a wooden bottom. It will also be an opportunity to focus on working with your own hands in the SLOW rhythm. Firstly we will prepare the material – cleaning and dividing the roots into smaller parts – the most important part – as well as planing construction elements from ash or hazel wood. Then, each participant, under the supervision of the teacher, will weave her/his own your basket and take it home.

These are unique products that you can not buy in any store. This technique is so time-consuming that we will create a round basket with a diameter of only 16 cm.

During the workshops, we will use the following tools: knife, pickaxe, chopper, plane, awl, horse-shaving bench. Participation in the workshop provides knowledge and skills sufficient for making after a basket on one’s own.

Jan Zogata has always woven (see his baskets here), and his teachers were men in the family. They say about him “a humble man with a big heart”. He says that basketry is “like a drug”. All the tools he needs to work, he made by himself. During our workshops with his pupil Bartłomiej Juroszek we are going to know many secrets of his workshop, we will also listen to his interesting stories.

In 2016, it was with Mr. Jan that we ran our first project from the series “Master of Tradition“, when young students learn crafts from experienced teachers.
