Spruce root weaving – master workshop

We invite you to participate in the next master workshop of Serfenta! It will be a unique meeting with a master who weaves beautiful, unique baskets of spruce roots.

MATERIAL – ROOT SEARCHING

During the workshop, we will have a unique expedition and encounter with nature – we will go with the master to the forest and see how to obtain spruce roots. This is a difficult but very durable material. Acquiring it is labor-intensive – each root must first be “hunted” and then excavated. You also need to have a lot of knowledge and sensitivity to do it without harming the environment.

MASTER ZOGATA

Jan Zogata has always woven, and his teachers were men in the family. They say about him “a humble man with a big heart”. He says that basketry is “like a drug”. All the tools he needs to work, he made by himself. During our workshops, the master will familiarize participants with the secrets of his workshop, we will also listen to his interesting stories – Jan is a perfect storyteller!

An additional advantage of our workshops will be the presence of Paweł, a student of Jan Zogata, who will be his right hand. In 2016, it was with Mr. Jan that we ran our first project from the series “Master of Tradition”, when young students learn crafts from experienced teachers.

WHAT WILL WE WEAVE?

During our workshops, we will get know the material, and each participant will create a unique bowl of spruce root. It will also be an opportunity to focus on working with your own hands in the SLOW rhythm. We will prepare the material – cleaning and dividing the roots into smaller parts, as well as planing construction elements from ash or hazel wood. Then, each participant, under the supervision of the teacher, will weave her/his own your bowl and take it home.

These are unique products that you can not buy in any store. This technique is so time-consuming that we will create a bowl with a diameter of only 16 cm.

During the workshops, we will use the following tools: knife, pickaxe, chopper, plane, awl, horse-shaving bench. Participation in the workshop provides knowledge and skills sufficient for making after a bowl on one’s own.

WORKSHOP SCHEDULE

Friday:
16:00 – 20:00
Stories about spruce roots and basketry in Poland, a trip to the forest to see how to get roots, not hurting the tree.
Learning how to clean and split roots to be able to weave them.

Saturday:
9:00 – 18:00 (including an hour break for lunch)
Learning how to split wood warps.
Mounting the warps to the wooden base.
Building bottoms and walls on wooden moulds.

Sunday:
9:00 – 18:00 (including an hour break for lunch)
A show of weaving spruce root basket, made on a cross wooden base.
Continuation of weaving and finishing the bowl.

Price: PLN 680

The price of the master workshop includes participation in 20-hour workshops, pedagogy support of the instructor from Serfenta, access to tools and pre-prepared material (roots, branches, wooden bottoms, moulds), as well as coffee, tea, and small refreshments.

The number of places is limited.
