Our work with the Polish craft of basketry attracts visitors from all over the world!
Guests from all over the world are coming to Serfenta! During the week, the Serfenta’s place and basketry workshop were visited by people from Australia, Canada, Austria, and Hungary, and we look forward to another visit from guests from the USA.
Knowledge and know-how on how to present cultural heritage in a contemporary way
They come from all over the world to gain knowledge on how to present and sell crafts, and cultural heritage in general, in a contemporary way. During study visits, they learn the secrets of the work for which Serfenta has won numerous awards worldwide. The most famous is Europa Nostra, for its Innovative Model of the Craft Revitalisation (authored by Paulina Adamska, Urszula Szwed, and Łucja Cieślar). The Pest-Budai Handicraft and Folk Art Public Benefit Association came to us for this knowledge.
Craft Experience workshops
But, they also come for practical classes – at 1 Srebrna Street, Polish basketry classes are held, where you can learn unique materials and techniques but also relax. When your hands are working, your mind is resting, and we all need that these days! Polish crafts have much to offer, and our cultural heritage is still very strong.
Magda connects Poland and Australia
Magda Myszkowski came to Serfenta from Australia, seeking a connection with her Polish roots and her own culture and history. She spent three days in the studio learning various techniques and materials, including weaving from rye straw and reed. She will take the skills she acquired in Cieszyn to her Polish community in Australia.
A basket maker from Canada
We were visited by Michelle Zikovitz, a basket maker from Canada, along with her husband and friends. We’d been in touch online for a long time, and this was an opportunity to finally get to know each other and exchange experiences from our countries and communities, but also, of course, our knowledge of basketry and the nuances of running workshops. It was a very pleasant meeting!
The paths along which craftsmanship travels are incredible, and basketry weaves not only materials but also human lives.
