Basketry days deluxe in Sweden

Basketry days in Sweden – basketry days deluxe! That’s what we’ve been doing in Hemslöjden Skåne in Landskrona for three days in September.

We visited Sweden to meet a wonderful group of basketmakers, heritage experts, crafters, and craft lovers from all around. We are happy that we can be a part of this event and share our experiences, our business model, our solutions based on tradition, and the education ideas in a craft area, awarded by Europa Nostra. We are also always happy when we can promote Polish Intangible Cultural Heritage and share its beauty!

Basket fest in Hemslöjden Skåne

We started on Sunday with the basket fest in a beautiful building of Hemslöjden Skåne in Landskrona. Lots of people talking and exchanging experiences, networking, FIKA (the important Swedish heritage), basketmakers showing off their treasures and knowledge.

Seminarium of crafters and heritage experts – webinar

Monday was the international seminar time. Great presentations from several European countries, with lectures. Participants joined both in Landskrona and online. All in all, over 100 persons from 15 countries.

We had a pleasure to present the situation and solutions for basketry craft in Poland, and also our Business Model “Model of Craft Revitalisation”. Thanks to Nämnden för hemslöjdsfrågor (Friedrike Roedenbeck) we’ve been welcomed with honors on the stage!

Baskettraditions, situation and possibilities in Poland – By Serfenta (Paulina Adamska and Łucja Cieślar), Poland

Is the basketry a “dying craft” nowadays? Serfenta started from deep research; they crossed thousands of kilometers to discover why basketry is awesome and how it is done. Poland is a rich country in the basketry area – many techniques, different natural materials, masters of tradition. They are going to present the conclusions from 16 years of gathering knowledge and gaining experience from traditional masters of basketry, which led them to creating an original model of teaching crafts.

Serfenta is one of the three UNESCO-accredited NGOs in Poland. Their international basketry journey has continued for 16 years now and has started from the ethnographic research. Leaders of the organisation are experts at modern and business approach to basketry craft. Serfenta created their own Business Model, thanks to which they earn money to carry out our activities regardless of external funding. Serfenta’s goals include sharing, promoting, and managing knowledge about the intangible heritage of basketry. Their activities cover workshops (mostly Polish techniques and materials) and expert events about the meeting point between cultural anthropology, craft, and market and bringing the craft experience to everyone. Serfenta teach those, who then teach others to spread the knowledge and skills of the basketry. In 2022, Serfenta received the Jeonju International Award for Promoting Intangible Cultural Heritage (JIAPICH) with strong focus on sustainable business. They are also finalists of New European Bauhaus Award 2023 with the Innovation Model of Craft Revitalisation. The motto of Serfenta is “craft experience available for all”

Polish basketry workshops – materials and techniques

On Tuesday, two smaller groups took part of the “workshops deluxe”, led by us. One workshop is straw looping (Paulina Adamska) and one in weaving with cattail (Łucja Cieślar) (now we know the word kaveldun for typha latifolia. It was such a pleasant time in Sweden.

Sometimes we’re travelling near and far to share our skills and knowledge, and also to tell people about the values hidden in craft which we all need in the present and future world.

Last year we’ve visited Hemslojden in Landskrona, tomorrow we are starting our travel to Drei Eichen, Germany. We are open to share all this also with your audience!

What we are going to offer there?

– a lot of relax and joy of handcrafting!
– one-day workshops with cattail and straw
– two-days workshops with cattail and straw
