Serfenta in Tokyo, partnership

Serfenta in Tokyo – for the first time we visited our partner – Takekagoya basketry shop!

Serfenta in Tokyo – Takekagoya

We visited our partner @takekagoya in Tokyo! Ichikawa Tomotake – San is the 5th generation in the family, leading the family basketry shop in Tokyo. In the past it was many shops like this, now it’s the only one and the oldest basketry shop! And with an honour, we need to say that we cooperated from 2018, and thanks to this cooperation, we sell baskets from Poland in Tokyo!

Tomotake-San has visited Poland, and this time, Serfenta had the opportunity to visit his special place with baskets from Japan and from the whole world. It was an amazing experience, and we listened to many stories about the baskets. We also share the experience and knowledge about craft & business combinations. Lately, we discussed it, and we could share it during the fantastic Japaneese food experience. It was such a nice evening in Tokyo!

The history of Takekagoya

Mr. Ichikawa took over the basketry craft store from his father and has been running it for years with his wife. They are deeply committed to continuing their family’s heritage business. They sell baskets from Japan and around the world and recognize the great value in craftwork.

„Sometimes the baskets teach us the culture and life of those who live in other areas. Also, it depends on “the climate”, the climate decides “what plants are grown there”. Between hot areas and cold areas, near the sea area and near the mountain area, the baskets are going to be different – material, how to harvest, shapes, how to weave, how to use. I think “making baskets” is quite a simple thing, but on the other hand, the world of basketry is so deep and wide. It’s kind of regional, historical, natural, essential, sometimes personal, and familiar.” – Ichikawa Tomotake-San wrote.

If you’re visiting Tokyo, find in Google 1basketry.jp and have a look inside for a crafty gift, like a special basket from Japan! Do you know, that’s /kago/ mean basket? You can even find in his shop baskets from Poland sklep.serfenta.pl, which are not any more in our Polish shop – like the bag from Ms. Helena Rogala.

Thank you Takekagoya for hosting us so nicely!

The travel to Tokyo was a part of our presence at Expo Osaka 2025. Check more about that!
