The Serfenta Association exists so that basketry could live. Our work is meant to preserve the tradition and knowledge passed on from generation to generation. We travel to distant places to learn everything about basketry. We teach young people to become experts in a dying skill. We help master basket makers get into the market. We show this beautiful craft to the whole world.

The Polish National Commission for UNESCO Certificate of Appreciation for educational activities

On the 21st of August 2015, during the 3rd Wicker and Weaving Festival in Nowy Tomyśl, we were awarded the Polish National Commission for UNESCO Certificate of Appreciation for educational activities implementing the ideas of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. We received the certificate straight from the hands of Professor Sławomir Ratajski, Secretary-General of the Commission. We are really happy and grateful!

Now we are preparing to include the weaving method of kabłącok (a willow basket from the village of Lucimia) on the Polish List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. We know Lucimia, its inhabitants, and their basketry skills very well, as we began field research there as early as in March 2009. Later on that year, we described the local tradition in the publication entitled "On the basketry trail of the Vistula River" and we documented the method of weaving kabłącok step-by-step in the tutorial video "Weave it yourself" in 2011. By staying in touch with the local community and establishing contact with the local authorities from the commune of Przyłęk and the district office of Zwoleń, we managed to organise a meeting concerning the UNESCO Convention, which took place on the 14th of January 2015 in the Cultural Centre in Rudki. The Norwegian and Danish participants of the basketry workshop, which was run at the same time in the house of Ms Todzia Sowińska, were also present at this event. During the meeting, we presented the results of our work connected with Lucimia and we provided information related to the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and the formalities necessary to be fulfilled in order to include kabłącok on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

We are planning to meet the people of Lucimia again, to organise a poll concerning the participation in the process of inclusion of kabłącok on the List, to shoot a 10-minute film about the local weaving traditions, and finally, to draw up the application.
