The Serfenta Association exists so that basketry could live. Our work is meant to preserve the tradition and knowledge passed on from generation to generation. We travel to distant places to learn everything about basketry. We teach young people to become experts in a dying skill. We help master basket makers get into the market. We show this beautiful craft to the whole world.

Basketry book

The Book
You can purchase the book On the basketry trail of the Vistula River released with an audio CD documenting the most interesting and important fragments of ethnographic travels made within the project.

Excerpt from the text on the cover:

We are a group of friends gathered at Uniwersytet Ludowy Rzemiosła Artystycznego [People's University of Arts and Crafts] in Wola Sekowa. Our group includes: master a basketmaker-braidmaker, an ethnologists and crafts instructors.
We travel across Poland searching for traditional basketry-makers, minor artisans, hidden in the interiors of their homes, followers of local traditions, as well as folk artists. We are interested in their life and work – what materials they use, how they acquire them and what they make?
At the same time, we learn the basketry techniques different from the ones we already know. Crossing still new places on the trail of the Vistula valley – following the name of the project –we look for answers to the question – Does this, special and beautiful for us, branch of traditional crafts has a chance to survive? For how long?
We cannot give an answer. Therefore, we will try to show everything that we experience during our travels. Diversity of raw materials, techniques and types of basketry, but above all, the people who work and create in the privacy of the Polish countryside. To meet with them, to talk and finally... to admire what arises out of their hands...
